About

What is Pilates?

Pilates in its classic form was designed as a complete, whole body fitness program that strengthens, stretches, and balances the entire body.  It develops the muscles of the body from the inside out, improves suppleness of the limbs, functioning of the vital organs and endocrine glands, clarifies the mind and develops the will.  By combining the Western traditions of sports and exercise with the Eastern philosophies of breathing and mental concentration, Joseph Pilates created a new and unique blueprint for healthy living.  The expansiveness of the Pilates Method, with more than 500 exercises and a variety of supportive apparatus, makes it ideal for people of all age groups and fitness levels, as well as those recovering from injuries or suffering from chronic illnesses.  Each exercise emphasizes proper alignment, positioning and breath.  As a result, the body is re–introduced to healthy and functional movement patterns designed to reprogram the neuromuscular system and restore youthful natural movement.  While emphasis is placed on precision, coordination and an awareness of the body in space, the approach is engaging, challenging and fun.

Core strength, or lack thereof, affects everything from our posture to our ability to move efficiently. The stresses of everyday living eventually takes its toll on us all.  From the inactive person to the accomplished athlete, we all feel its effect -- spinal compression, imbalanced musculature, and fatigue.

At Mindful Balance Pilates, it is my goal to specifically address and resolve these problems.  My commitment to clients is to uphold the highest standard of instruction.  My private studio houses the equipment necessary to perform the complete repertoire of the Pilates Method.  I recognize the relationship between stressful physical demands, compensatory imbalances and limitations in movement and flexibility as well as the precise application that will dynamically restore ease and economy of movement.  Thus, I effectively design programs for clients with high levels of physical conditioning as well as physical limitations and conditions, such as fibromyalgia, scoliosis, osteoporosis, arthritis, back pain, various injuries, pre-natal and post-natal, helping clients to achieve personal goals and healthy body function.
